On the eve of the World Press Freedom Day, Freedom house released a report on Press Freedom that ranks the kingdom as 147 out 197 countries.
In its ranking, Freedom House’s report uses the restrictions imposed on journalists, correspondents and their sources of information as important criteria: Morocco has been classified as a “non-free” press country.
This report comes only few days after a proposed reform on Press Law, prepared by the Ministry of Communications in collaboration with the National Union of Moroccan Press, which contains amendments that requires journalists to reveal their sources in court. Al Massae considers such reform as a “remarkable” regression, as journalist hold an ethical contract with their sources, especially when it comes to anonymity.
In this occasion, the National Union of Moroccan took the opportunity to emphasize on the government’s reluctance regarding the establishment of a law that guarantees the access to information, which is a constitutional right since 2011.
