The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, said on Wednesday in Valencia that Morocco is not just a neighbor, but a strategic partner for his country.

Albares affirmed during an event organized by the newspaper Las Provincias that “Morocco is a strategic partner, not just a neighbor. We must have the best relationships with our neighbors, like Morocco, and this is what Spain has successfully achieved.”

The head of Spanish diplomacy noted that last February, Spain, and Morocco held the first high-level meeting in Morocco in 11 years, indicating that this meeting brought together the largest number of ministers from both governments and resulted in the signing of 20 agreements.

In this regard, Mr. Albares emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

He added, “If we consider important sectors such as trade, the two countries have reached a record figure of 20 billion euros in trade, and 11,000 Spanish companies export their products to Morocco, and 1,100 companies are incorporated in Morocco.”

Regarding irregular migration, the Spanish Minister pointed out that “all European routes are increasing significantly, by +305 percent through Italy and +95 percent via the Greek route, while the flows of illegal migration to the Canary Islands and Andalusia have decreased on average by 75 percent.”
