The Court of Appeal upheld the original verdict against the 20 teachers who belong to the “National Coordination of Teachers Forced into Contractual Employment”. The judge said the teachers were found guilty of unauthorized unarmed assembly, violating health emergency regulations, causing harm to public service personnel, and defamation.
The initial sentence, which was now confirmed on appeal, resulted in 19 teachers receiving a two-month suspended sentence and a financial fine of one thousand dirhams. One teacher, Nezha Majdi, faced an additional charge of insulting public officials with the intent to harm their honor and disrespect their authority, resulting in a three-month sentence.
These verdicts come amid a series of protests by a huge number of teachers in Rabat, who have been advocating for their integration into the public service sector.
Notably, Moroccan authorities, influenced by IMF recommendations, have shifted away from hiring teachers as public employees in recent years.
